    Default Tofino?

Can some members recommend a good time to be up in Tofino for the Northern Coho bite? Looking to possibly make the trek up there this fall. Thanks!

    August 23rd at 11:30 am.

Seriously late August early September is a good time to aim for.

I've gone out Sept long weekend a few years and row and had a great time but the guide also mentioned that was about the tail end of the season.

Default Tofino Coho in August 2010

I recommend heading to Tofino for a great experience. If you have never been there before, you really ought to make the trip. You will need a seaworthy boat or hire a guide.

Its a real Pacific ocean dream fishing area. Of course Long Beach is a major tourist attraction for everyone. I camped right on the beach in 1972 for one week before they disallowed camping there. The "hippie "days they were. Met people from all over who had never seen the Pacific ocean before.

On a later camping trip with my wife and 2 year old son in 1980, I wanted to go fishing real bad. One night, I left our campsite and headed to the docks. I had the good fortune to meet the only Doctor living in Tofino who I saw was loading some rods onto his 19 FT. Boston Whaler. I holled at him, "Do ya want some company?" He said "Sure, co'mon over". We went out and trolled flashtails behind small flashers. After about 3 hours without a good strike, it was getting late and we knew we only had a little time left. I was holding the
third rod in my hand ( we had 2 in the port and starboard rod holders ) when BAM, a big fish struck hard and jumped out of the water. It looked to be 20 lbs. The fight was on ! After a thrilling battle, watching the coho run away from the boat numerous times in the crystal clear water, we finally netted him. It was 13 lbs. We divided the fish in half , headed back to the dock very happy now, said our goodbyes and I headed back to camp with my half a fresh caught coho. A great dinner followed with me floating on Cloud 9 all night.

The flashtail is a fly , it was mostly white and yellow polar bear hair.

You need to troll faster that you would going after springs. Coho like it fast, it has to resemble a baitfish trying to escape.

So when you get tired of slow summer lake and river fishing, the ocean is alive with opportunities ! And they run BIG sometimes.

yeah, Tofino is great getaway and the fishing can be quite memorable.
