    Default Intruder flies

What makes a fly an intruder? I was looking in the steelhead gallery and most have trailer hooks but not all. Other than that there aren't many distinct similarities between them except most of them are bright.

i think what makes it an intruder is the body shape of the entire fly.

    thick - thin - thick

if you take a look at most intruders and they are tied right they will have alot of bulk near the butt thin through the body then alot of material again at the head.

at least this was how i was taught to tie them up

i find that tying them like this easiest on cut off hook shanks, wadingtons or tubes

Ed wards description of an intruder is a large fly that elicts the hardest and most aggressive strike from an angered steelhead. Intruders can be shaped anyway you want, but most have large shoulders, nice streamy/flowing materials as collars and soft tails that allow the whole fly to taper down into a tear drop shape. (natural shape of most aquatic creatures. leech, minnow, eel, worm)

I perfer to tie mine on tubes or waddingtons, this allows you to swap out dull or damaged hookes, and not have to trash the fly.
