Default "Alternative" species on the fly...

As a spinoff of phearless' count the species thread, does anyone here target perch, flatfish and lingcod on the fly?

If so what patterns, tactics do you use?

I've considered scud like patterns on saltwater hooks suspender under a strike indicator for perch.... your thoughts?

In fresh water it's easy to get all kinds of other fish: perch, suckers, carp...

I used to target suckers in the river as a kid. Used either a big wooly bugger (any colour will do) or an orange crayfish pattern right on the bottom on a sink tip. A 5-6 lb sucker is a good battle when you're 10

I've also caught suckers by accident in lakes fishing leeches.

Of course squawfish/pike minnow? are an easy target with any big fly in streams and lakes all over BC.

Used to get sunfish in Christina Lake on small drys.

I imagine that in the saltwater, anything's possible as well, but the issue is getting down to the fish rather than developing a fly that works.

Fishing off docks and off beaches, I've caught lots of bullhead on flies!

How about a 5' ling on a fly...Large Pink Shrimp Pattern behind an Island on the north western side of the Island several years ago...trying for small Halibut but suddenly surprised with a Major TUG!

Originally I was looking for Black Bass but didn't see any...I was using a type 7 full sinking line, the fly was tied on a Salt Water Circle Hook Size 3/0...Lazer wrap Nose,Bead chain Eyes and a heavy Fl Pink glo in the dark flashabou tail section, with just a pinch of Flash... at 40' it was more a mater of patience and surprise at whatever comes up...several years earlier I also landed a smaller Ling on the same fly except tied in a Blue Lazer wrap and White Glo in the Dark Flashabou, while fishing BAJO Reef of the west side of Nootka Island.
