Default Iced off lakes around Chataway

    Hey All:

What are the chances that the satelite lakes around chataway(Gump, Billy, Antler, Dot, Gysum, Gordon, Roscoe etc) will be iced off by May 14th? they are sitting at about 4500ft and i live on vancouver island so i have no idea of the history of these lakes. If anyone has a crystal ball that can give me a good idea..that would be huge! Thanks Todd

    Default Chataway Satelites

Hey Stapler- we live down the road in Lower Nicola, haven't gone for a drive to check them out yet this year, but I'm pretty sure they are still fairly solid as we had a snow squall here yesterday afternoon. I will see about going for a drive around the end of the month to check things out.

    will keep you posted--dave

Todd, in a perfect world those lakes will ice off just before your trip which is very likely. If it does you must fish Dot. It has monster fish that are notoriously hard to catch with the exception of late fall, traveller sedge season and spring pre-turnover. From the boat launch if you look across the lake you'll see three points along the shore. Head there and check out the very rocky shoals. The fish will be lying in between those points and just off the shoals where the depth goes from 3-11' rapidly.

Gypsum will be good around the island on the shoals. Le Roi #3 has a beautiful shoal right in the middle of the lake and the fish should be there intercepting bloodworms on their migration. It's also a great Dragon lake so fishing a juvenile nymph can yield great results as well.

The lakes on that mountain range from 4200' to 4900' so you may find some iced off and some not. If the higher lakes are still ice you might want to check out Tyner, Fehr, Abbott, Gordon and my favourite, Little Cougar halfway down the mountain.

MacRib, if you take a trip up the mountain talk to Fred before you go. I gave him directions to access the original road to the resort dating back to the '50's when the only visitors to the resort were doctors and lawyers. It passes through a bit of history and when you finally reach the top of the mountain you'll find yourself at the back entrance to Gypsum. Besides this route is way better than 30km of year round washboard.
