Same for me. 20 lbs down to 12 or 10 lbs.
I usually only use 2-3 feet of leader.

Well we are in the season of heads on the rivers for steelies.
Just wondering what length of leader/tippet others are running.
I have never found steelies to be very leader shy.Generally on my fast sinking heads I will use a short 25lb butt and go straight to 10 or 12 tippet.
On a very " technical" day, I might run an intermediate section in there.
Usual length is 36 to 48 inches. No sense putting a long leader on a sinking line and have it float up and out of the strike zone.
Comments?

Straight 15 pound mono or flouro of about 4 feet. Steelhead aren't leader shy.
The further away from the Ocean I go the longer the leaders...yet rarely over 3 feet of straight 12-20 Lb..depending on Water Clarity. If these fish bite onto 6" palstic Pink Worms 3 feet away from 4" of Dark Leadthen small diameter co-polymer isn't a concern! I have had Fresh Steelhead hit my Orange Connector (Loops Type 3) several times to a point where I now use a black Magic Marker to disguise the colour.
C
on sink tips 1.5 to 2ft.
Depends on conditions, but if underhand casting with lead-head flies then can be 20ft. But usually that's only when its warmer
