I read an article saying tiemco will put 20 hooks instead of 25 in a bag now and charge the same. Also it will put 10 hooks in a 12 hook bag with the same price. Kinda sucks because they cost lots already.

I went in last week to get a pack and there were still 25 in the pack....but the price had gone up $2.50!!! I'm now paying $9.00/25!I read an article saying tiemco will put 20 hooks instead of 25 in a bag now and charge the same. Also it will put 10 hooks in a 12 hook bag with the same price. grrrr. that's not super cool, but I guess that's a product of the recession or what ever you call this phenomena.
Also, metals seem to be in shortage, or at least higher in value on the world market.
I guess it might be good to invest in an exacto knife to cut apart old flies to re-use the hook if it's still sharp.
I'd be curious if anyone really could explain to me what is so much greater about Tiemco hooks. I have been using Mustad for years and have never had a problem. Even expert fly tyers call for Mustad hooks in their patterns.
example - In the book Contemporary Fly Patterns of British Columbia, Brain Chan contributes 8 patterns, all calling for Mustad hooks. Roughly half the patterns in this book call for Mustad hooks. Can they really be that bad?
In all the years I have been tying, I can't think of more than 1/2 dozen times I have broken a TMC hook in the vise. I flatten all barbs on my hooks before I tie up, by squeezing them in the jaws of my vise. The few occasions I have used Mustads, I have had serious issues with them snapping off as I de-barb. You only have to break 2 or 3 hooks per pack and your price per hook suddenly equals TMC and you still have to deal with the aggravation. I also have found Mustads to be less sharp than TMC. I think the reason you find Mustad hooks specified in many recipes, is that they have been around forever, and are probably the most universially available hook on the market. (Just my guess).I'd be curious if anyone really could explain to me what is so much greater about Tiemco hooks. I have been using Mustad for years and have never had a problem. it's all fun and games untill someone looses a fish
I didnīt knew they were reducing the number of hook per pack, that absolutely sucks, specially when TMC is very expensive around here, you can find them for 20 to 30 usd a 25 hook pack, I'm using now mostly daiichi, because I can buy them at a better price from Hareline, but TMC hooks are still my favorite.
I buy Teck Twin hooks. They are made by Tiemco. Same look and I have found no difference except the price. You get 50 hooks for the price of 25 by Tiemco. I get them from Kenkraft in Lavington BC. They have a web site. Hope this will help you. ChasI read an article saying tiemco will put 20 hooks instead of 25 in a bag now and charge the same. As a retailer we have been advised that the price increase to us is about 15%...for the past 2 years we sell most Tiemco hooks by the 100 ..$23.00
And will continue doing so...to me as a fly tyer it makes little sense to buy 25 for $9...in fact Mustad is also rising in price and there will be little difference in costs..

Hi
I agree SalaR, pretty simple math. 25/9 or 100/23.
Even if you don't need 100 this month over the course of time they will get used.
I guess if metal prices have climbed over time , finished products follow suit.
