    Question Steelys nightmare pattern

Just wondering if anyone could give me the pattern recipe for the steelhead nightmare pattern. I have seen some of these flies with rabbit bodies, chenille and schlappen and eve polar chenille. I was just wondering what the original pattern calls for.
    Thanx,
    Brian

Hook = Dont think its too important(sharp)
Tail = Pearl Krystal Flash over Pink Rabbit strip
    Body = Black crystal chenile
Hackle = Black Saddlehackle wound till end of marabou section (this will give it a marabou collar)
Eyes = Silv Plated or Painted Med Lead Eyes

    Sweet, thanks.

I made a modification to make one really similar to a "pink worm" so you could fish it dead drift like a gear fisher. - Tube or hook with point cut off
The rest is the same as above. Use what ever colours you think are good- same idea as buggers. The lead eyes are optional for me.

The trick is to hook the trailing hook through the last few milimeters of the rabbit strip. If you use a moderately small hook (size 2 or 4 rather than 1/0) then it's less obtrusive and is in the right spot.

If you pre-punch the rabbit strip with a larger hook or a big needle, the stinger hook goes in easier.

I've yet to fish this fly, but I think the design is sound and sensible. The only concern I have with this design is that the stinger hook might lead to deep hooked fish.

Since the ole pink worm works so well, I figured why not build a fly version. I'm a fan of indicator fishing for trout, so if you go with the lead eyes, make sure you use a big indicator- I like to use a small kids party balloon- you know the ones used for making water balloons. Just blow or suck a little air in, and tie it off, then tie it onto the leader. It's easily adjustable and usually stays put. You can trim the end with nippers to make it neat and tidy. Hard to cast more than 50' or so though, and is really only effective with a roll cast. Overhead casts tend to get snarled cause the balloon is bulkier than a small trout float.

I'll see if I can post a pic of what I'm talking about later today when I whip up a few more flies.

Check the photo's area for steelhead flies. It's on this site. Lots of good variations shown!

Here is a stinger hook version of the "nightmare". I'm not sure I'm happy with it, but I'll give it some time in the water this spring just to see. I think I like the original version shown above.

Like I posted before, I hooked the trailing hook right through the rabbit strip. Perhaps getting white or pink dacron instead of black...

you dont need to punch the rabbit strip. just put on the trailer then put it in your vise. wrap some thread on the shank, dab of superglue and place it in the spot you want. overwrap with some more thread....done.

Cool, I've never tried that. Sounds much better than the punch version. I'll have to get some glue.
