I dont remember specifically, b/c it's been years since I fished early spring on roche, but I'd say it is ice off by mid may for sure. I usually didn't start fishing it until early June though.

Lot's of good holes, just use your eyes and troll around until you get some action. 100 or so feet off the island in front of the resort is always good for a couple fish. The usual arsenal works. Big leeches and scuds. Gear -the usual willow leaf trailing a wedding band with worm.

You really can't go wrong on that lake. I can't remember when it turns over though...

Default Usually off for opening day (May 1)

But last year was quite late. Every year is a bit different, great lake to fish if you like to be around lots of guys.

If you are just starting out that may not be a bad thing as watching some of the better rods can really help the learning curve, especially if you are not shy and try to chat them up back at camp.

I had a cabbin rented out for May 1 and there was still ice over in 2008. But in May 1 2007 I had a nice sunny day of good fishing. The old guy there told me it was the fist time in 10 years that the lakewas still ice over on May 1 .I will be going up the first two weeks in May. I hope is helps you out. Thay also have good web site with a web cam. Good luck good fishing and RELEASE your catch.

I thought Roche was a fly-fish only lake?

Was at the outdoors show this weekend and this question came up during a Brian Chan seminar...he said that last year the ice came off around May 8th and that it could be even later this year....

Same here, during his fly tying demo right? That was pretty cool stuff. I thought it was neat that he was tying up Chromies of a sort using anti-static bag material.
