    Default Weave bodies.

Been trying to tie some bodies with a Shuttle weave (parallel).
Does yarn and string type material only work or does anyone use noodles or what is on the bench ?

    thanks

I'm sure each material will offer it's own challenges.
I've only tried yarn, poly flash braid and liquid lace. They all work well enough. I'm sure chennile works well too, as could dubbing loops.
Liquid lace was easiest since it is smoothest.
I'm assuming you have directions on the weave...it took me a while to figure it out even with directions, but like making a friendship bracelet at summer camp, it's easier than it looks.
Any who, back to tying up patterns for Pinks.

I haven't tied woven patterns for some time now but I used to tie them with lots of different materials. One of my favourite Dragonfly Nymphs was tied in 2001 for a fly tying contest and was liquid lace and krystal flash. You can see this pattern if you go to ariverneversleeps.com and go to April 2001 in the back issues.

I'm sure there are some materials you can't weave with but there are a ton of possibilities for materials that can be used. I wasted wayyyy too much time experimenting with different ideas but it was a lot of fun and you can create some works of art if you so choose. Have fun with it!

If weaving with chenille be careful when sinching up your knots as you can strip the chenille. Using ultra chenille eliminates this frustrating problem.

Every time I try and do a weaved body it looks like crap and I give up. I will have to sit down one day and really give it a try and keep practicing. It is one of the skills that I have not even started to get proficient at and I want to tie up some bitch creek nymphs. Well maybe this weekend.

I had a lot of trouble getting a good looking woven fly until I ran across this article. http://flyanglersonline.com/ Once there, click on fly tying on the left column, then click on advance fly tying on the left column. Best illustrated directions for woven bodies I have ever come across. They are not as hard as they seem, and bitch creek nymphs are a really good place to start.

Default A Fly Tier's Benchside Reference

    I have the book
    A Fly Tier's Benchside Reference
by T. Leeson and J. Schollmeyer

Its a fantastic book i recently picked up in a second hand store. If you can get it, its totally worth it- it has clear instructions for several different weave methods from basic to advanced that give different finished looks.

I think, other than intruder tying, it has almost every type of tying you can think of covered in clear instructiuons and photographs. Its great!
