    Default Brookies

Does anybody out there target Brook trout in the ponds?
I have caught a few years ago in Marquart.
One dandy around, an 18" football.
I have been thinking about giving them a go again.
Pretty fish, fight more like a cutty.
Taste good. ( haven't had one in 20 years though )
    Tight lines

    Default Brookies

Oh, where to start? Marquart still has some monster brookies up to a conservative 7 lbs. Kane Valley has some beauties in L/U Kane and L/U Second. I have gotten 20" brookies out of Lower Kane but not for some time but my favourite will always be Chicken Ranch......when it is on!

It's been a while but the lake at the top of Iron Mtn. Rd., Edna(?) has some good brookies as well but the largest ones I've seen in the recent past have come out of Red Lake.

After taking a hint from the Mickey Finn I tried bright yellow Pumpkinheads on a brookie lake last summer and was not let down. Years ago I used to fish Bealie Lk. on Pike Mtn. every September for brookies but according to the locals the rancher got choked at all the garbage left there and he fenced off the access. Used to make for a good fur and fin day hunt.

Patterns for brookies that work consistently are rabbit strip leeches in black and olive with flash of course, white micro leeches and my favourite, big white Shrimp tied with Krystal Chenille. For Marquart try a size 6 '52 Buick using peacock ice dub instead of peacock herl. Brookies are lots of fun and it's true, they taste incredible!

Unfortunately my area of expertise is around Merritt and between Merritt and Kamloops. If you call Steve Jennings at Kamloops Flyshop(250 377 8461) he can more than likely enlighten you as he owns the Little Fort Fly Shop as well but give it a month. I believe he's down in Nicarauga chasing bones.

I will always love getting stillwater brook char on the fly. Have got a few through the ice so far this year but ice fishing is more of a social type hobby for me.
I can't wait to get out there and start chuckin some big, dark olive spratleys, olive/black/burgundy buggers/leeches, and of course, chronnies.
I actually got a few on dry flies last year too. Never had that happen before so I am looking forward to trying that again..

If you are headed to the Merritt area come a few minutes north, old Hwy 5
to the Roche lake turn off turn right and head towards Roche lake, before you get there you will pass Tulip, and Rosebud lakes(ponds basically) both have sizable brook trout populations.
