Fred,
I don't even know if it was a caenis hatch but I ran into a major hatch of size 20's in an undisclosed lake in the hills above Tunkwa and I, personally, wouldn't dream of tying Caenis patterns or for that matter tie one on so I had to improvise. I took a size 14 Griffith's Gnat and with fine scissors cut two evenly spaced gaps in the hackle which in turn made it look like three very small flies. I have no idea what they were taking it for but it got me some love! The hatch lasted all of another half hour. The real peculiar thing about that day was that I arrived at the lake at 8am in mid-July and there were spent cases everywhere and like I said the hatch lasted another half hour so by the number of cases I figured it started between 4 and 5am.
