    Default Spey tying books

ok im looking at getting into tying the fancier type of spey flies. I was looking at this book at the fly shop and wanted to see what you guys think about it.

Is this a good book to grab?

Feel free to suggest others i should look at. Oh and is there any tying books for salmon/steelhead that will have regular flies, spey flies & intruder patterns in it? as you can see i just browsed a bit but didnt have time to look more as the lady was with me LOL

    Default Spey books.

Shewey's book Spey Flies, Their history and construction is a great book. I own it myself and am very pleased with it. Steelhead flies, another John Shewey book is also very good.
Bob Veverkas book, Spey Flies and How to Tie Them is also excellant. These books are all must have's in any spey fly tiers library.
You might also want to look at Advanced Fly Fishing for Steelhead by Deke Meyer, A Passion For Steelhead, by Dec Hogan, and last but certainly not least, Contemporary Fly Patterns of British Columbia, by Art Lingren.

    Hi HOOK,
That is a great book- it covers step by step all you need to know to tie spey and dee flies. It starts by running htrough their history, which is really interesting. It has traditional spey flies as well as more recent offerings from the likes of Syd Glasso and Dick Wentworth. It is a great book, i love it.

Another book by the same author is titled Steelhead flies. This is a newer book, and i have not seen it in all that many shops. It covers spey and dee flies, as well as flies like practicioners, prawns, hairwings, dries etc. It is a book of more traditional flies- you will not get intruders in this book, and generally it is a book that is equally or more focused on summer steelhead than winters.

Both books deals extensively with materials, and step by step instructions allow relatively new tiers to tie nice looking flies. You can get them in a bound spine, that sits open when you are using it and tying at the same time and a hard cover version. I like the ringbound spine version as it isconvenient, and does not close up when you sit it down. However, be careful as the rings can be a bit tight and its easy to tear a page.

One thing i'd remember with both of these books, though is that they don't feel to me like they are oriented towards BC rivers like the Vedder- they are more traditional flies than what you see most folk use there- no rabbit strip or rhea here. However, you can take a traditional fly like an Akroyd and beef it up into a big, pulsing tube fly- a classic with a modern twist.

One more thing- prepare to be frustrated trying to wing spey and dee flies! I find it really hard but its worth the pain!

:doh:Well BC_Speys thank you for almost overwhelming me with books to look up now LOL I will be sure to look those books up though.

FFFF- Thanks for info about the book also. I did flip through it enough to see the step by step intructions

I have dabled with a few spey patterns and dont find them overly difficult mind you I have a good eye for detail LOL I really would like to start tying some of those reall fancy show flies someday

Is there a book that covers Intruders only? or are those a pattern you kinda make up on your own LOL

I dont mind buying a couple books, I just wanna get ones i will use. Right now i only own The Fly Tying Bible which covers trout flies mostly but does have a few salmon flies in it (mostly saltwater) and this was bought for me by my lovely girl and i have tied several of the patterns in it.
