    Default Danville thread

I mostly use uni-thread but I have a spool of danville and I hate it. It is a regular waxed 6/0 and it is much weaker than uni-thread. Did I just get a bad spool or is it weaker thread?

I find the uni products to be far more superior than the Danville threads. I had a roll of 8/0 awhile back and tossed it in the garbage because it kept snapping. Purchased the equivelant Uni thread and I've had no problems at all.

Uni gets my vote, hands down!

I've bought a couple rolls of uni thread that, upon closer inspection seemed older- the outside a bit bleached etc. These also seem much weaker- could age of thread have anything to do with it?

As time goes on, i'm getting far more focused on examining items in stores before buying- otherwise you can end up with junk!

I have also found Uni-Thread to be superior to the Danvilles thread. I find the Danvilles stuff will fray pretty quick then snap on you I have one maybe two spools of it in 8/0 and i have since replaced them with Uni-Thread

The age of the thread can certainly be a factor, and I never thought of looking at that before I turfed the Danville in the garbage.

    Good point!

    Default Sun Light

Do make sure you keep your threads out of the sunlight. Over the past 6 or 7 years I have gone almost exclusively to using Invisible Sewing threads(Mono). Unless the recipe calls for a specific colour finish...and even then I will simply add the coloured thread as an over coat. The only down side of the invisible threads is their tendancy to lock the materials in very firmly , not a good thing if you are doing dressed flies with soft loops....and the thin thread really collapses the vein in feathers. However,it is very strong and reliable

Thanks Salar thats a good tip about tying with Mono-Thread. I have this for tying some flies but never thought of using it for all of them I use it for my dry flies mostly and other small trout flies like chronies also because like you said it holds very well and is strong. I can normally hold down material with one good wrap instead of 2or3 wraps like i do with thread.

Most of the thread I use is Danville, largely because it is readily available. I had trouble with the thread breaking, until I bit the bullet and paid the price for a couple of quality ceramic inset bobbins. I have not had any issues with thread breakage and tie almost exclusively with 8/0 thread or lighter now.

I bought a good griffin ceramic bobbin the other day to see if it would help. I still had it break a bunch of times. I think it is old thread though.
