    Default Thanx, I think....

    Hello all,

I have just received the flies I won in the book review contest.(thank you Fred) All the flies I received are awesome, and were hand tied by members of this forum.( GeoffVL, Knotknot, Phearless and Flyfishforfun. The flies look great and I can't wait to try them. So as I sat here looking at the flies it dawned on me that maybe I could try my hand at tying a few. That was 2 hours ago and I have since been to Pacific Angler and back, with a lighter wallet and some beginners supplies! I have been inspired. Anyone have any tips or suggestions? Keep in mind I have never tied a fly before.

    Thanx, I think....(haha)

    Default Bitten!

Another fly fisher who has fallen to the evil vise!
Seriously though, you will get a lot more out of your fishing.
    And save money, maybe.
    What did you get?
What do you want to fish for?

I recommend a wooly bugger to start.
It will give you experience with hackling, body material etc.,
    and will catch fish.

Down the slippery slope you go . I started with the wooly bugger and then the pheasant tail nymph. Both are good and give you the basics and you can catch fish with them. After you learn the basics you can pretty much tie anything. It's nice using step by step instructions but if all you have is the recipe just remember the materials are written down in the order you tie them on. Also just take your time, you don't have a deadline you have to meet. When I started tying I always rushed and I don't really know why.

    Default Good for you

AS we all know, those of us that do tie, the most difficult thing to master was the ,or I should say,our agility with the necessary tools. Understanding how tight to wrap the thread without breaking it,the god aweful Whip finishers, hackle pliers, don't cut your thread!, clamp jaw vice and then rotary vices...but at the end of the day, using our imagination to creat and work with different patterns and materials is more than 1/2 the battle.
Nice tight wraps, don't jamb the head, and use good head cement....
    Have fun of course

I took me a long time to be able to use my whip finisher and my hackle is starting to look better.
About a year into it and I have not given up.
If I do not really watch my wraps and what I am doing the head gets huge and onto the hook eye.
I owe alot to this site and its members for tons of advice.

    Hey bud,
So since our conversation this morning, you have entered a dangerous (for the wallet) place! I've got dvds, books galore and other stuff that'll get you going in the right direction. Pacific Angler runs a beginners course, which would be a lot of help. I was in the store last night and the class was taking place, so they may not be running another one for a wee bit.

Other than that, we can spend one night this week or next looking at a few things if you want?

    Default Fly tying night.

Sounds like you guys need to put the call out for tiers in your area for a
    FFBC tying night.
Perhaps one of you should put a post in Fly tying nights.
Great way to accelerate your learning curve and have some fun.
Very often leads to fishing as well.

What kind of flies did you get for prizes.

Also I recomend searching on YouTube for either the flies you want to tie or particular techniques to fly tieing ie dubbing, hackles, whip finish etc.

Also google different flies for recipes as well as pictures showing each step.
