    Default what part

    Hey Hook.
as for the deer hair, you want some of all types.
Belly hair is mainly for spinning. Large and coarse. Not much good for winging.
Body hair is the standard stuff for muddlers etc.
The hair off the legs and hock is shorter and finer, good for dries etc.
The face, yes the face, great for small dries, comparaduns etc.
Bucktail is not just from bucks, but it is off Whitetails, not Muley.
The muley is once again very coarse. There will be some that is useable, but you want to stick with Whitetail mainly.
If the deer is a coastal/island blacktail, you will have some of the very best dry fly hair around. Shorter and finer than Muley, it has a very high oil content to combat the rain. That ="s floats better and longer.

Do a search as there is a very recent thread on preserving materials.

    Have fun.

    Hi

I have seen lots of White tail up around Tulameen.
Black bears always show up when I want to fish there too.

It is free. Take whatever he gets. White tail is better than muley for many flies, but mule deer is still good hair, especially for muddlers, gomphus, Madame X's, etc.

well i called him and they get Muley. if they get one he is going to get me the entire pelt minus the head but he will cut me off a few face chunks LOL

what i did forget is that he used to do taxidermy so he is going to show me how to treat the hide so it doesnt go bad on me

i told him if they get a moose i want that also LOL (not sure which parts of that i could use but i know there is some)

He is also going to bring me a couple grouse are these good for tying?? I havent seen grouse used i dont think, always hear Pheasant though.

    Default moose etc.

Moose is my fave for tails on a lot of my dry flies.
Moose body is very stiff and floats. Bonus!
You can also use the mane for bodies, old school mosquitos were one strand black one white wound on together.
Moose is what you need for larger dries for STEELHEAD!!!!!!!!!!

    Grouse is very useful.
Aywhere it calls for partridge you can probably sub grouse.
I use it all the time.
    Soft hackles, legs etc.

Thats a lot of tying you have coming.
    Have fun
