    Default Vice for a Vise

    hi

I am asking for a vise for christmas.
Anything from my 20 dollar special will be an improvement.
The toddler gets the big money so without freaking the wife out what do I get ?
Will 80 to 100 buy a decent model.
I can only compare this to my $100 bass when I was 12 to my $1500 now.
They both work but quality and precise sound.

Hard to explain more money equals better quality generally.

When it come to vises their are not alot of decent vise for around $100 bucks! Probably your best bang for the buck would be the Regal, easy to use and guaranteed for life! Most fly tyers that have been doing it for years will tell you the exact same word!! The vice sells for $120, this vice that will last you for many years!!

    Default Vise

Have a look around the site as well. I believe there are a couple of threads out there on this subject.
I think Griffin has a couple of good vises that are reasonable as well.

I have been tying on a Regal for 20 years and I still love it.
Do yourself a favour and get the the model you can rotate. Big difference.

Also get or build a pedastal base for it.
Nothing like plunking it down and tying.
As well, by positioning the vise away from your body you can rest your elbows on the table for more comfy tying.

But as we all do I have thinking about a new vise as well.

    Thanks Rick and Phearless.

I will take the names down and your words o' wisdom .
Then venture to one or more of the Fly stores for a scouting mission.

    Default Regal

Tell your wife you are going to tie flies to sell.
That way you can justify the extra dough for the rotating model.

Take a look at the Peak vise. It is rotary and comes with a pedestal base. A bit over the price range that you quoted. This link gives you a Canadian company that says they don'r charge for shipping. I've bought from them and have had good luck.

Look at the vises available and try to get one that you will be happy with for a long time, even if you need to save for awhile. There are probably a few of us that could loan you a vise better than you are using to keep you going until you can get what you really want.

I have the Peak vise and the only complaint I have with mine is that there is a slight amount of play in the rotary shaft. If I keep the screw a slight bit snug it is great. Different jaws are available, but a bit of a pain to change.

    Merry Christmas .
The wife must have read this thread because she got me a Regal Inex.

As well as a box of Stillwater Solution supplies.

Guess what she wanted..........another diamond ring and a vacuum.

Nice! I remember the year I gave my wife a vacuum. After she opened the gift I didn't see her for three days. Luckily after the second day the swelling finally started going down!

best one I ever got away with was a toilet seat! The one we had was wooen and had a crack that kept pinching her butt, but she still wasn't too impressed with the replacement as a present. The nest best was a carpenters apron and a framing hammer. We were planning a deck for he spring, so she took that one with grace. Wonder how I still am married (28 years).
