We went to Mexico in 93 and went out with a guide,I landed around 15 myself my arms could not handle anymore. In total we landed 28 in about a 5hr trip.Puerto Vallarta Oct.93 it cost us 50.00 each at that time [200.00 in total]
Anyone ever think about going out for Tuna?
This has been on my mind for quite awhile now.
I think it is time to start looking into it for next year.
Guess I better start looking for a 12wght.![]()

That sounds cool.
I should have been more specific though.
There is a burgeoning fishery for these here on the west coast.
It is quite a ways out, but I have read several reports of fly fishers doing well with either the chum and cast technique or if weather does not permit, trolling flies.
Anyone else have an itch to go?
Hi Ph..
That would be cool, I thought charlie tunas liked the warm salt.
By far out do you mean west of Van Isle ?
It would be real fun to legally hook one on the fly.

I remember guys from Powell River talking about going out Tuna fishing in the local salt chuck
I Think they come up that far just do not know how many and when but late Aug /Sept rings a bell.

Thanks Oakey,
I will have to call the boys and see wat up wit dat.
It would be worth asking the commercial fishermen down at Steveston. I was down there a few weeks back and they were selling whole bc tuna about 12lbs off the boats- beauty size for a fly rod, and bbq! I'm sure those guys would have some gems of knowledge in terms of timing, locations, depth, food sources etc.
Plus, you can get some great fish and chips when you're there!
That is a Sport Fish that we all should have access to.. The commercial guys do have a bit of fun with these great fish. One of MY buddies called me this past Summer from one of his boats on a sat' phone...he was about 250 miles off the Oregon Coast...lots of Tuna in the 20 lb range and very willing biters...Last year he was casting to them off the upper deck of his boat with a 13' Grey Loop Two Hander and got into a few...also landed some big Coho during the trip.. Ocassionally these fish(Tuna) will make their way to the west and North side of the Island...typically about 20 miles out. I can't Imagine the power of these bullets!
