Hey Patches.
The ants are starting around here as well.
Mostly crawlers but a few flyers.
Hopefully another couple O' hot days and we will get some action.
I better get tying up some ants though. I only have a couple in my box.

black ant hatch has started . first few days in the 20 -25 range . the small foam ant works well and always floats , even after a beating from several fish. all the lakes that have standing flooded timber ,have the best hatches.look for the largest over hanging snag and just watch as millions of large black carpenter ants pour from the dead log and cover the surface of the water . then like they knew it was coming , hundreds of small 10-16 inch cutts gorge themselves into a slumber that can last days as they site low and digest a hardball size belly of ants . this can be one of the most active times to catch cutthroat on the dry fly and worth keeping an eye out for this on your lake soon.
some years it can be tricky to pin down but on a cold year like this the first few hot days are easy to read....its now........patches-D

I was up on the weekend at a high elevation lake in the merritt area, not alot of chironomids coming off, but, a fair amount of ants, could buy a fish though
So whats everybody think, when they are gorging on ants, will they stop feeding on other food types?
from what i have read in books. when the ANT hatch happens this fish basically gorge on them and leave everything else alone because the ant hatch only lasts a few days. Just what i have read not from experience...yet (havent timed it right yet)
the ant hatch happened on saltspringisland a month ago.usually the first 2 days of 20+ degree weather.I still caught cutts on my usuall brass and green minow pattern as well as foam ants.fishing was slow after the hatch.
