we must make sure that our work with natures systems is sustainable and does not have a negative in pact on our streams . even when things are done with the right intentions they can have a impact that we did not foresee .the local salmon enhancement group stocks fish above the natural barer ....to me this is having a negative impact on our steelhead populations . right now a mother steelhead is laying eggs while thousands of Chinook smolts are racing down from the lake and eating the eggs and fry that will come from these eggs . these Chinook never made it above the falls down stream a few miles.....oh ....ya....they are a fish that was never in our stream to start! it was one of the 10 top steelhead streams in the lower mainland region......now..... only the last survive to deposit eggs in the same grave as there parents in the STEELHEAD spawning grounds above the falls. this stretch of river is only accessed by steelhead coho and sea run cutthroats . who gives them the right to undo what 1000's of years of evolution has done ? and after bringing this up at the G.A.M i was told to sit down and shut up ... why? because the same guy that is the lois lake fish farmer ....is on the board for our salmon enhancement team .(and he does not like me, lol) it sucks when you live in a town where so much could be done....but.... we let fish farmer run what we have left of our natural stocks and a hole bunch of spring fisherman take over our steelhead streams to raise Chinook. a stream is a ecosystem and has a divers array of fish and bugs and habitat where they must all live till they head to sea . if we are going to play with these numbers of fish that it needs to be looked at as a whole ...not a place to raise and wipe out what we want to target for food or fun . thats my before coffee rant for the morning...thanx :beerchug:
