Doc Spratleys and leeches in most colors are always good bets when first starting out.

Don't forget the dries like an adams irresistible or a royal coahman

You can go nuts buying and choosing flies. First, figure out where you will start out fishing, when you will fish and what you will fish for. There is no point buying steelhead flies if you are going to go to the Skagit or an interior lake. You can add flies as you expand your horizons.

The Morris and Chan book has some excellent fly suggestions for still waters. Alf Davy's, "The Gilly" has fly information for all sorts of fly fishing in BC.
